Combined with athleticism, David is incredibly intelligent. He has a 4.69 weighted GPA. He is also a member of National Honor Society and the Editor-in-Chief of the school’s newspaper. David also makes time to give his time and energy within various service organizations in the area. He co-founded, and is now the president, of the Citizens of the World club at Bob Jones High School. This club offers community service projects with international goals for the members to get involved in. He also founded a road race called the Run to Kure Infant Disorders (R-KIDS) which raised over $10,000 this past fall. David’s dedication to his training, schoolwork, and community are some of the features that make him an impressive young man worthy of this week’s Athlete of the Week title. Olivia received a Varsity Letter for playing as an offside hitter on Providence School’s Lady Knights’ Volleyball team. The same volleyball team that Olivia helped co-found her Freshman year. She is also the team captain and received the Most Improved Player Award. Recently, Olivia began rowing at Rocket City Rowing Club and became the Novice 8+ Regional Gold Medalist for her team. Olivia also plays softball for Covenant Christian Academy Falcons as a first baseman & center fielder, as well as the Huntsville Sharks. While busy in her free-time, Olivia has still maintained a 4.0 GPA, contributed to the editing and design of the school’s yearbook, and drama/choral presentations. With a compassionate heart and a desire to serve, Olivia donates her time and energy to Rainbow Omega (a home for mentally handicapped adults), The Veterans Home in Huntsville, and the Downtown Rescue Mission. Olivia’s accomplishments are endless. Somehow she still makes time to to dedicate an incredible amount of her time to service projects and organizations. A culmination of these qualities is why we are honored to name Olivia as this week’s Athlete of the Week. Congratulations!

Tyler has played both football and baseball during his high school career at West Limestone High School. In football, Tyler played safety and fullback. He also suffered a concussion his junior year, but overcame the injury and was able to play his senior season. Also this year, West Limestone added a bass fishing club and Tyler joined the team and placed 3rd in the school’s tournament. Along with incredible athletic ability, Tyler is ranked 2nd in his class and served as class Vice President. He plans to attend the University of Mobile majoring in Biology and Intercultural Studies with a partial scholarship. Tyler is also extremely involved within his church and community. He has participated in church planting and building projects World Changers and Habitat for Humanity. He also has served as a camp counselor at Camp Joy, a camp for under-priveleged kids, for the past two years. An incredibly well-rounded bio makes Tyler an outstanding choice for this week’s Athlete of the Week.

The post Front Squat vs. Back Squat appeared first on .

There are several factors to address when talking about the differences between the front and back squat. The most significant being the bar position on the body and therefore the load on the body. This is what differentiates everything about the two movements. The load changes the mechanics and thereby the muscles used by the body during the squatting movements.

The back squat is one of the most fundamental exercises in strength and conditioning. Whether we are discussing the high bar or low bar back squat (variations of the same movement), the fact remains that the load is supported across the upper back. During the front squat the bar is positioned across the front of the body – typically resting on the deltoids/shoulders, just on or in front of the clavicle. The body position is more upright throughout the movement, as a result of the shift in bar position and the lifters center of gravity. With both movements, hip and thoracic (upper back) mobility/flexibility are important to maintaining proper form and achieve a full range of motion. Developing proper position in both variations of the squat takes time and good coaching, so this is a process that should not be hurried – with regard to both range of motion and load – patience is important for long term health and performance.

The execution of the front squat can be more complex because of the bar positioning, but very beneficial. With this frontal load, the arms/shoulders/thoracic spine and hips must be capable of achieving proper positions of support, which can take time to develop, but is also why it can be such an important movement to learn – as it is a highly transferable movement, i.e. clean, push-press, jerk, etc. It also gives the lifter more control over the bar and load throughout the range of motion – more control means less potential for injury.

Overall the front squat requires more effort to complete, recruiting more muscle, and ultimately burning more calories. So, if your not including the front squat in your strength and conditioning program, ask your trainer/coach to guide you through the learning process and build a stronger foundation while burning more calories.
