Steven Sheibley – HH & TOC Athlete of The Week

March 15, 2013 – Steven Sheilby

Our next Athlete of the Week is the kind of person you would look up in the school’s yearbook and find his picture under the title, “Best All-Around.” One could argue you could place him in the “Most Likely to Succeed” category, also. In either case, Steven Sheibley has shown that he’s not just involved with his team and school work, he’s involved in the life of his school and community. If there’s something happening at Pope John Paul II Catholic High School, you know that Steven isn’t too far behind. Starting in the locker-room, where Steven leads the Falcons varsity basketball team on the court ever night as Captain and starting player. His commitment earned him a spot on the 4A All-Tournament Team this season. Usually, around this time, Steven starts making his way outside to take on his two other loves; golf and running. Of course, he’s not taking both on at the same time, but his swings on the links have earned him a spot on the Falcons Varsity Golf team and his strength and speed have proven to be quite useful on the Falcons’ Track and Field team. Here, Steven found the Pole Vault to be his forte and got so good with it, he became the Metro Pole Vaulting Champion and State Qualifier in 2010. Steven’s love of sports has sparked his interest in possibly pursuing a career in sports medicine. For now, he’ll have to continue tackling classes like AP Chemistry and AP French to maintain that robust 4.45 GPA that he carries around. Steven is a member of the National Honors Society, the National French Honors Society and has been named an AP Scholar. But, even when the schoolbooks are put down, Steven finds the time to stay involved in his school and in his community. He stays very involved with the campus ministry, helping spread the mission of his school to incoming students, as well as others wanting to come to Pope John Paul II Catholic High School. You will also see Stephen with a coach’s hat on his head and a whistle around his neck when it comes time for the next Powder Puff football game. Or, you might even find him wearing another hat: those would be the crowns he likely received from being named Homecoming King last Fall and “Mr. JP2” for 2013. Those would be tiny recognitions, by comparison to the work Steven puts forth. With several volunteers projects, clean-up projects and more than 200 community hours under his belt, Steven is an easy pick for this week’s Athlete of the Week. Congratulations, Steven!
