March 8, 2013 – Former Montgomery Bell Academy and Tennessee standout R.A. Dickey, now a knuckleball pitcher with the Toronto Blue Jays, emerged as the Sports Person of the Year on Thursday in the tightest ballot in the history of the award, given annually by the Nashville Sports Council.
The announcement was made at the 15th annual Pepsi Celebration of Champions event at the Grand Ole Opry House on Thursday.
Dickey said he did not consider the fact that he received the top honor as meaning he beat out the other finalists.
“Everybody was worthy of winning in their own right,” Dickey said by phone Thursday. He is training with Team USA in preparation for the World Baseball Classic and did not attend the event. “I’m certainly humbled because the competition to win the award is just so deep and rich.”
