When opportunity presents itself, it’s up to each individual to make the decision of whether to jump at the chance, or let that opportunity pass. Some of those decisions are harder to make than others, based on several factors: time being one of them. For our final Athlete of the Week in the month of February, several opportunities have presented themselves to this young man and rather than saying, “I can’t fit any more on my plate”, his answer is, “Let me find some room for that.” Even with a full workload in the classroom, his commitment to three school sports teams and his community responsibilities, you still get the feeling that David Hergenroeder would take one extra minute out of his day to make a difference. He’s already made a difference for the Bob Jones High School cross country, indoor track and soccer teams. He’s a formidable runner for the Patriots and as Team Captain, has led his cross country squad into the Alabama State Meet for the last three years, as well as helping lead the indoor track team to the State Indoor Meet. David also excels on the soccer field as a varsity starter and has been recognized on the All-Metro Team. In the classroom, David sports a robust 4.9 GPA and is on track to graduate in the Top 5 of his class. In addition, he’s been recognized as a National AP Scholar, twice and is a National Merit Semifinalist. He’s a member of the National Honors society and has notched the highest score on ten AP exams. David has earned accolades for his knowledge of the Spanish language and was also selected for the U.S. Department of State National Strategic Language Initiative Scholarship, where he spent seven weeks in China learning Mandarin Chinese. Despite being named a Wendy’s Heisman Award Winner and also an elected representative to the Bob Jones High School Student Government Association, David’s greatest achievement could be the culmination of community work he’s done through the Boy Scouts of America. He has earned the ranking of Eagle Scout and was recognized to the Boy Scout Honor Society (Order of the Arrow). Congratulations, David!
