Understanding the concept of progressive overload for improvement is very important when discussing training. Unfortunately the idea of “muscle confusion” has a lot of people confused about what exactly effective training and programming is.

Changing your workout from one session to the next without monitoring volume, intensity, or frequency will quickly lead to a plateau in improvements, leaving you guessing what exactly you might be doing wrong – after all your creating as much “confusion” for the body as you can, doesn’t that mean you should still be getting better? For GPP, various workouts and bouts of exercise with no real goal or objective can be a good way to simply stay healthy, maybe, but for the athlete and individual with a purposeful goal in mind, we must have a more structured understanding of what we are doing and a well thought out program to follow. Otherwise we are throwing a dart at a board after being blindfolded and spun in a circle…

This is where quality coaching comes into play. If your training isn’t progressing, if your not getting faster, stronger, leaner, or bigger, then check your programming — or your coach — you might need a more educated and well rounded approach to your training plan.

CLICK HERE to read a very interesting article in Forbes magazine about High Fructose Corn Syryp (HFCS).

Summing up here, it seems we are always quick to demonize and focus on one thing. The media attention can draw our gaze as we fixate on a single evil. It is an understandable thing to do.

“It’s THIS, THIS one thing that is causing the obesity epidemic.”

These statements leave out other dietary considerations and over-simplify complex conditions. Perhaps the over-consumption of sugars and calories in general is more to blame here – but this doesn’t sound as sexy to the media monster. The truth is that there are always many factors involved in any equation, and unfortunately nothing is simple and is rarely straight forward. The stand out factor that has garnered attention with HFCS seems to be the Fructose component. Many hear that Fructose is a poison, and is somehow the evil counterpart of sugar, but the truth is that Fructose is naturally and simply, fruit sugar. It is found in most plants, fruits and honey. When bonded with glucose it forms sucrose — table sugar. It is not an evil monster, but a natural part of this world, which our bodies are quite accustom and efficient in dealing with.

Ultimately the over-consumption of any particular edible can be a dangerous practice for long term health. Humans are meant to eat a varied and seasonal diet, while maintaining an active lifestyle. It is a challenge in this day-in-age to eat a well rounded, varied, whole-food diet, but this is our mantle for long term health and wellness and we must be willing to pick it up.

February 17, 2014 – This week we are proud to announce Paul Richardson as our Athlete of the Week. Paul is a multi-talented athlete in Track, Cross Country, and Basketball at Whitesburg Christian Academy. He has been on the Track & Field team all four years of high school, and holds two school records, one in the 3200 m (at 10:21) and one in the 1600m (at 4:52). He was the 2012 Whitesburg Team MVP and the 2013 AHSAA lA Section 3 Meet 3200m Winner and Record Holder. Along with incredible speed, Paul is equipped with endurance as well. In Cross Country he holds an impressive personal best 5K of 16:41. He was also named Overall Winner in the 2013 Section 5, Site A Overall Winner, 2013 Mustang Invitational Overall Winner and Course Record Holder, 2013 Scottsboro Invitational Overall Winner, 2013 Randolph Cross Country Classic Overall Winner, 2013 Jesse Owens Classic Overall Winner, and 2013 St. Bernard Oktoberfest Overall Winner as well as the 2013 lA/2A State Championship Third Place Winner. He has also displayed athleticism on the basketball court, serving as Captain of the team for three years and starting as a point guard the last three years. Outside of the sports arena, Paul is just as busy. He maintains an impressive 3.88 GPA, is a member of National Honor Society, and has earned several Leadership Awards. Another fascinating fact about Paul is that he is the co-author of Teen-to-Teen 365 Daily Devotionals By Teen Boys for Teen Boys published by LifeWay Christian Books. Paul is a perfect representation of a well-rounded young athlete deserving of our Athlete of the Week title. Congratulations Paul!

October 22, 2013 – DeMeco Ryans, Linebacker for the Philadelphia Eagles, has had a pretty eventful past few days. On Sunday the Eagles took on the Dallas Cowboys. Ryans had a team-high eight tackles, including a team-best six solo. DeMeco also managed his fourth career interception — first this season. He has 60 tackles (47 solo) through seven games.

Monday morning, DeMeco visited with Louis Wagner Middle School to team up with the United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey to dedicate a new youth fitness zone for the school. “It really means a lot to me, just to be able to provide these kids with things they don’t have, Ryans said. “Like this equipment, it gives them an opportunity to exercise and it helps focus on their health and fitness. They now have the opportunity to do that, whereas they didn’t before. For me, I just come out and donate my time because, honestly, it’s the right thing to do. Being in a position that I’m in, I have the ability to bless others. When I was growing up, I didn’t have these opportunities, so whenever I get a chance to give back, I do it. I’m always eager to go out to schools and talk to students and see the smiles on their faces.”

October 21, 2013 – Philip Rivers, co-owner of D1 Raleigh and D1 Huntsville, passed his way to a victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars and into NFL history. The Chargers quarterback completed his first 14 passes of the game — his first incompletion came with 53 seconds left in the second quarter. Rivers finished 22-of-26 passing for 285 yards and one touchdown. The Chargers defeated the Jaguars 24-6. Rivers surpassed 30,000 yards passing for his career. Rivers became only the 37th quarterback in NFL history to throw for 30,000 yards for his career. The quarterback now is second in franchise history, but he has a ways to go before catching the great Dan Fouts and his 43,040 yards.

The philosophy is simple: physical fitness is the key to athletic success and longevity. The amount of smart preparation an athlete puts into his or her routine plays a big role on game day and beyond.

It’s a philosophy wholly endorsed by local health professionals who lend a helping hand to the area’s youth sports programs. Last Wednesday at the Peshtigo football field, Mark Husen of Bellin Health, usually a fixture on the sidelines of any Bulldogs sporting event, welcomed former Green Bay Packer running back Ahman Green to the field for a morning of instruction from a pro who spent more than a decade in the National Football League.

“I can talk to these athletes about this stuff until I’m blue in the face, their parents can also,” joked Husen. “But now you get someone in front of them who has experienced success at every level of the game from Pop Warner to the pros and it tends to resonate a little more with them.”

The “wow” factor quickly dissipated Wednesday morning as Green settled the large group of young athletes in with a very practical speech about how important the simple things like stretching and workout recovery were to his pro-football longevity. He told a story about a high-profile former teammate of his (non-Packer) who once questioned the amount of time Green dedicated to his fitness regimen. The superstar in question didn’t see the logic of spending so much time on something like stretching and he didn’t feel the need to incorporate it into his own in-season regimen.

That still-active player has been dogged for much of his professional career by nagging injuries, the type of injuries that a more focused workout regimen, the type of program promoted by Green and his new venture out of Green Bay called D1 Sports Training, could have helped prevent.

D1 Sports Training, which has partnered locally with Bellin Health for therapy services, is a comprehensive new program for athletes looking to stay in peak physical shape and it’s an approach that is picking up steam all across the country as former and current professional athletes like Peyton Manning, AJ Hawk, Herschel Walker, Jason Witten and Randall Cobb are bringing specialized D1 facilities to cities coast to coast.

After the quick debriefing from one of Green Bay’s most prolific rushers of all time, the athletes in attendance hit the field and were walked through some of the D1 program’s basic drills.

“I’m pretty sure that Ahman’s own warm-up routine from his playing days had to last 20 minutes,” Husen said. “He was always preparing and he was very detailed with it. He knew that if you did these things, it was going to pay off. He had a great message. If you put your time in and you’re willing to do all the things to put the odds in your favor, you’re going to have success.”

Author: Courtney Nuthals (D1 Greenbay)
From: Fortune Follows She Who Dares

The car is packed, your bags are stowed and you’re headed off on the road trip of a lifetime! You’re living in San Diego, CA and you’re so stoked to drive thousands of miles away to see New York City; your first stop is Zion National Park. A little while later you go to grab your map because you’ve come to an intersection you don’t recall. A panic comes to your body – you’ve forgotten the map. You say heck with it, turn right and clearly never make it to your destination.

Too many of us treat goal setting the same way. We dream about where we want to go, but we don’t have a map to get there. The difference between a dream and a goal? The written word.

IT’S TIME TO BECOME AN EXPERT AT BUILDING THE ROAD MAP TO YOUR GOALS.

Through the last week, while everyone was conquering testing I talked to everyone about GOALS. Enforcing to set a specific goal, the number one complaint I received was, “I don’t know how to set a goal.” So here I am to help.

First off, goal setting requires you to establish a specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time-targeted SMART goal. So many of us make goals that are unattainable. What we all need to do is learn how to set goals properly. Taking baby steps is the best way to achieve your goals.

BREAK IT DOWN

Break your big goal down into multiple smaller goals.

For example: if your goal is to run an 8 minute mile and you have a hard time running 1 mile straight to start off, set a goal that you can achieve in a shorter amount of time that will help you get there, such as “I will run one mile straight with no walking by September 1, 2013.”

After achieving that goal, you can now say, “I am going to run one mile in under 9 minutes by October 1, 2013”..and the goals keep getting reset once achieved.

WRITE YOUR GOAL IN PRESENT TENSE AND POSITIVE TENSE

Write your goals in the present and positive tense, as though they already happened. This gets your mind used to thinking that your dreams don’t have to be dreams; they can be reality.

Examples:

I can run one mile straight with no walking by September 1, 2013. I can do 5 strict pull-ups by October 1, 2013. I can do a handstand without the wall and can hold it for 2 minutes by August 2013.

MAKE IT MEASURABLE

Can you measure your goal? If you can’t measure it, it’s not a goal. This can be a challenging part of goal-setting, but there is a way to write each of your biggest, baddest goals so that they are measurable in some way.

So you’ve written down your goals. NOW WHAT?

TELL SOMEONE.

Telling someone keeps you accountable. As long as you share goals with positive, uplifting cheerleaders, they’ll be sure to help keep you accountable.

GET AFTER IT!

Don’t just write it down on a piece of paper and think it will happen! GET TO IT! You need to be ready to work your butt off.

Reviewing your goals daily is a crucial part of your success and must become part of your routine. Each morning when you wake up, read your goal out loud, visualize the completed goal. Then each night, right before you go to bed, repeat the process.

I remember about a little more than one year ago, my goal was to get “kipping pull-ups” down. I had SUCH a struggle with doing pull-ups. Give me anything lower body and I’d crush you. Give me anything upper body and I would get trampled on. I wanted to get stronger SO BADLY but I was doing all of the wrong things. I had this goal in my head and wasn’t doing anything specific to work on my pull-ups. Finally, I let my coach know my goal. He programmed 5 weeks of extra work on top of my normal training. It was hard some days. Some days I just didn’t feel like spending an extra 30 minutes at the gym post workout, but I kept telling myself, “is me going home right now going to help me achieve my goal or stray further away from it?” That question was answered immediately. Guess what? 5 weeks later I did my first workout with ALL kipping pull-ups. 50 kipping pull-ups total within 20 minutes (which was a huge deal for me)! After achieving my goal, I didn’t just say, “okay, I achieved my goal. Now I don’t have to work on pull-ups anymore!”…that just gave me that much more motivation to not let myself use a pull-up band ever again.

Every time you make a decision during the day, ask yourself, “Does it take me closer to, or further from my goal?” You’ll know what to do.
