Understanding the concept of progressive overload for improvement is very important when discussing training. Unfortunately the idea of “muscle confusion” has a lot of people confused about what exactly effective training and programming is.

Changing your workout from one session to the next without monitoring volume, intensity, or frequency will quickly lead to a plateau in improvements, leaving you guessing what exactly you might be doing wrong – after all your creating as much “confusion” for the body as you can, doesn’t that mean you should still be getting better? For GPP, various workouts and bouts of exercise with no real goal or objective can be a good way to simply stay healthy, maybe, but for the athlete and individual with a purposeful goal in mind, we must have a more structured understanding of what we are doing and a well thought out program to follow. Otherwise we are throwing a dart at a board after being blindfolded and spun in a circle…

This is where quality coaching comes into play. If your training isn’t progressing, if your not getting faster, stronger, leaner, or bigger, then check your programming — or your coach — you might need a more educated and well rounded approach to your training plan.

There are several factors to address when talking about the differences between the front and back squat. The most significant being the bar position on the body and therefore the load on the body. This is what differentiates everything about the two movements. The load changes the mechanics and thereby the muscles used by the body during the squatting movements.

The back squat is one of the most fundamental exercises in strength and conditioning. Whether we are discussing the high bar or low bar back squat (variations of the same movement), the fact remains that the load is supported across the upper back. During the front squat the bar is positioned across the front of the body – typically resting on the deltoids/shoulders, just on or in front of the clavicle. The body position is more upright throughout the movement, as a result of the shift in bar position and the lifters center of gravity. With both movements, hip and thoracic (upper back) mobility/flexibility are important to maintaining proper form and achieve a full range of motion. Developing proper position in both variations of the squat takes time and good coaching, so this is a process that should not be hurried – with regard to both range of motion and load – patience is important for long term health and performance.

The execution of the front squat can be more complex because of the bar positioning, but very beneficial. With this frontal load, the arms/shoulders/thoracic spine and hips must be capable of achieving proper positions of support, which can take time to develop, but is also why it can be such an important movement to learn – as it is a highly transferable movement, i.e. clean, push-press, jerk, etc. It also gives the lifter more control over the bar and load throughout the range of motion – more control means less potential for injury.

Overall the front squat requires more effort to complete, recruiting more muscle, and ultimately burning more calories. So, if your not including the front squat in your strength and conditioning program, ask your trainer/coach to guide you through the learning process and build a stronger foundation while burning more calories.

February 3, 2014 – Yoga has continued to gain momentum as a supplement into many individual’s training programs. Countless professional athletes and celebrities have acknowledged the incredible health and fitness benefits of the practice and have jumped on board (Shaquille O’Neal, Victor Cruz, Vernon Davis, Evan Longoria, Kevin Garnett and LeBron James to name a few– according to stack.com). We have recognized the increase in participation and made adjustments to the number of weekly classes. The new D1 Nashville yoga schedule can be found below.

T/TH – 12:00-1:00PM – with Coach Lisa

M/F – 9:00-9:45AM – with Coach Kellie

W – 6:00-6:45PM – with Coach Lisa

Sessions are free for our members and $20 per session for non-members.

*Flow Yoga – Vinyasa means “breath-synchronized movement,” and Vinyasa yoga is a series of poses that will move you through the power of inhaling and exhaling. Vinyasa movements are smoothly flowing and almost dance-like, which explains why it is sometimes referred to as Vinyasa Flow or just Flow.

*Yoga for Athletes – No matter the sport, athletes face distinct challenges in their quest for peak performance without injuries. Pro athletes and sports enthusiasts are discovering the many benefits to be enjoyed by adding yoga into their training schedule. Yoga teaches athletes techniques to efficiently merge mind, body, and sport, giving them the tools to propel their game to the next level.

January 23, 204 – For the first time in years Kevin Norwood caught meaningful passes from a quarterback not named AJ McCarron. The pair will always be linked together, but with McCarron choosing not to participate in the Senior Bowl in order to recoup from the regular season, it leaves Norwood catching passes from other quarterbacks this week. Norwood and McCarron will workout together at D1 Sports Training facility in Jackson, Miss to help prepare for the NFL Draft, but this week he’s working with Fresno State’s Derek Carr, Eastern Illinois’ Jimmy Garoppalo and San Jose State’s David Fales under the direction of the Jacksonville Jaguars coaching staff at this week’s Senior Bowl. CLICK HERE to read the complete article from The Tuscaloosa New’s, Aaron Suttles.
